You may have heard of baby signs and first signs, but what are they actually? I’m sure there are many mothers out there who are wondering about this. Here we will explain what methods baby signs and first signs use to communicate, and introduce the characteristics of baby signs and first signs. Let’s have fun communicating with your baby.

What are the characteristics of first signs and baby signs?

Babies who are still young cannot talk to their mothers. But babies want to talk to their mothers too! And mothers want to talk to their babies too! That’s right.

So there are two methods of communicating with babies: first signs and baby signs. We will introduce the characteristics of these two methods, so please take a look.

First Sign

First signs are a way of communicating with newborn babies. They use facial expressions, hand movements, tone of voice, singing, etc. to communicate with babies who cannot yet speak well.

Characteristics of First Sign

First sign classes are held all over the country. First sign therapists certified by the Royal College of Therapists will teach you at home or at other locations, and some maternity hospitals also hold classes. According

to the Royal College of Therapists, the period during which first signs can be made is “from immediately after birth until around 24 months of age.” Classes held at maternity hospitals may be more limited in time, such as from 3 to 10 months of age.

My child started when he was 8 months old and was able to communicate using signs from quite an early age, so looking back now, he hardly ever cried or fussed, and I’m glad that it finally happened.
Even if your baby doesn’t give many signs, they can still be connected to words, or there may be a sudden burst of signs, and in our case it may be more useful to use it once your baby is able to talk, but more than anything, it’s heartwarming to see your baby moving his little hands so hard, so I think it’s worth a try.

Before your baby can speak, many mothers worry about why they are laughing or crying. However, some mothers say that using first signs has helped them communicate and reduced the stress of raising a child.

Baby Signs

Baby sign is a childcare method practiced by the Japan Baby Sign Association. It involves communicating with young babies using simple sign language and gestures. It is a communication method created under the supervision of Dr. Linda Acredlo and Dr. Susan Goodwin, the developers of baby sign.

Features of baby sign language

A good guideline for teaching baby signs is when they are able to sit up. It is also said that babies learn signs quickly if you teach them when they start walking. In reality, there are individual differences depending on the baby’s development, but according to the Baby Sign Association, it is best to start when the baby is between 6 months and 18 months old.

The Aeon one I went to was in a hall in the mall, while the Toys’R’Us one was in a wide aisle in the sales floor.
Both had folding chairs, and the children sat on their laps, while older children sat next to their mothers. When the experience started, we did some baby sign language to go with picture books and songs.
My children participated when they were about 4 months and 10 months old, and regardless of the children’s reactions, the adults enjoyed it.
Some children around 1 year old were quickly imitating the movements.

Baby sign classes are available all over the country, and trial classes are held at Aeon, Babies”R”Us, and Nissay Life Plaza. Check their official websites to see if there are any classes scheduled in your area.

Have fun chatting with your baby!

There is not much difference between first signs and baby signs, so why not check out a class near your home? Of course, you can also teach at home without going to a class, so it might be worth a try. This is good news

for mothers who have given up on the idea that their baby will be able to talk until they grow up. Why not learn signs like baby signs and first signs and enjoy fun conversations with your baby?
